Dear Huskies and Friends of Huskies ~

The first three recipients of the Dr. Horace Jackson Legacy Scholarship are now college students! Angelina Garcia and Giermo Aguirre are attending Riverside City College and Fernando Cruz is attending Cal State Fullerton. All three are a little nervous — and also very excited to be pursuing their degrees and their dreams.

Angelina Garcia and Giermo Aguirre are attending Riverside City College, and Fernando Cruz is attending Cal State Fullerton.

One of our founding members, Michele Himmelberg. reflects on meeting Giermo and Angelina at RCC:

I got a chance to meet with the RCC students on campus recently.  It took me way back to age 18, a time when I had to bravely take on new, adult responsibilities. Angelina is studying to be a nurse, and also working. Giermo is learning the welding trade, and also working.

Founding member Michele Himmelberg got a chance to meet Angelina and Giermo at RCC.

One thing they said deeply moved me: Without this scholarship, neither one would have enrolled in college this year.

I hope that is meaningful to every donor who made these scholarships possible. The Dr. Horace Jackson Legacy Scholarship has provided keys to their futures, with financial assistance and encouragement to pursue a higher education.

I also met with Inez Moore, the new Dean of Equity, Inclusion and Engagement at RCC. Thanks to Mary Figueroa, North High alum and RCC Board member, we connected with Dean Moore this summer. RCC officials are very supportive of the scholarship as a way to inspire more local high school students to enroll in college.

Inez Moore, the new Dean of Equity, Inclusion and Engagement at RCC, meets with Angelina and Giermo.

Dean Moore provided critical support to Angelina and Giermo as they enrolled and began classes. She introduced them to the RCC Welcome Center, which offers personal outreach for students to get engaged on campus.  She also made them aware of resources like the Career Center, academic counseling, peer mentors, cultural organizations and the new student food pantry.

We’re cheering for these North High graduates as they make this important and challenging transition to college.

Thank you to all the donors who made this next step possible for the students. We want to give a special shout out to the many who have already made multiple donations and these donors who are making monthly or quarterly donations:

Cathy Jackson (Dr. Jackson's wife)
Chuck Ball '75
Lori Burns '73
Janet Cousins '79
Jerry DeBerry '77
Oscar Edwards '72
Molly Williamson '74 (in honor of Nancy Takano)

Our one-year anniversary is fast approaching and we are making a special plea to all of you who made an initial contribution to consider matching it again in 2022 or doing whatever you can.  Please also consider that a great way to help is to find one Husky or friend and ask them to make a contribution.  Every dollar makes a difference.

We’ll be in touch soon about the 2023 scholarship and plans to help the next North High grads begin their educational journeys!
