Dear Friends ~
Your support has made it possible for the Dr. Horace Jackson Legacy Scholarship fund to make its first awards only 7 months after fundraising began. Our three young recipients pictured here, Fernando, Angelina and Giermo, are worthy of both our support and our respect. They all demonstrate promise as students and, most of all, as compassionate individuals who will be successful on their educational journey and thus in our communities. Thank you sincerely for your generosity.
We want to give particular thanks to Horace Jackson’s wife, Cathy, pictured here with their daughter, Carolyn (who was on the selection committee) and Oscar Edwards, Class of ‘72, who delivered the outstanding speech at the North High Ceremony on May 12 before handing out the awards. From the start of the scholarship, Cathy has committed to a recurring donation of $1,000 per month. Thank you so much, Cathy.
We also want to thank Cully and Terri Williamson (Cully is Class of ‘75) whose business, Mary’s Pizza Shack, offered a $10,000 match which brought our fund to $65,000 in May. Thank you, Cully and Terri for supporting the Dr. Jackson Legacy Scholarship and the students we aim to help.
And one more shoutout to Jennifer Takatori Lim, Class of ‘72, who had awesome medals made for each awardee, with the image of Dr. Jackson on front and their names on back. If you could have seen their faces when Jennifer gave them the medals. What a feeling!
As Oscar said in his speech, this is just the beginning and we have much more ahead to help support our fellow Huskies. Annual tax-deductible gifts of any size will make it possible for the fund to grow and the size of our awards to increase with the rising costs of a college education. Many donors have already given to the fund in both 2021 and 2022. We are grateful and hope that others will also consider a recurring gift.
Please help us spread the word. Our list of donors is made up almost exclusively of John W. North High School alumni, but other fellow alumni may wish to join our effort who do not yet know of the scholarship. Right now, Facebook is our major outreach tool, but not everyone is on Facebook – and, if they are, there is no certainty that they often log on. If each of our existing donors can simply reach out to old high school friends and encourage them to go to our website (horacejacksonscholarship.com) for more information, our network of support will broaden.
It has been a remarkable 7 months for a grassroots effort. Initial fundraising has resulted in nearly $70,000 toward the $100,000 that we hope to raise by the end of this year. Our ultimate goal is to make scholarship awards strictly from the interest on our account at the Inland Empire Community Foundation. We sincerely hope that your continued support will help us toward that goal.
In asking for your support, we want to ensure your trust by providing transparency in our administration of scholarship funds. If ever you have a question that is not addressed on our website, particularly under the newsletter tab, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are all available to answer your questions.
Thank you again,
